The following County departments seek qualified candidates to fill anticipated positions Countywide:
* Flood Control Department
* TLMA - Transportation Department
* Waste Management Department
Under general supervision, to do routine sub-professional field and office civil engineering or land surveying work, including surveying, traffic control, materials testing, drafting, hydrographics, photogrammetry, construction inspection, right-of-way, or waste disposal; and to do other work as required.
This class is the first working level of engineering technician and is characterized by the assignment of a variety of sub-professional civil engineering or land surveying work requiring some degree of skill and judgment. |

Examples Of Duties:
|
DEPENDING ON THE AREA OF ASSIGNMENT, DUTIES MAY INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:
ENGINEERING:
• Makes topographic, cross-sectional, and profile drawings and maps using manual or computer aided techniques; prepares preliminary construction drawings and tracings from survey notes and other materials; indexes and files maps, drawings, and other engineering records.
• Takes and prepares field samples for laboratory analysis of a variety of soils, aggregates, concrete mixes, and other materials being used for construction projects.
WASTE DISPOSAL: Under direction of Principal Engineering Technician or supervising Engineer:
• Assists in preparing technical reports on solid waste landfill sites, including availability of cover material, expected life, effect of run-off, access, and ecological impact.
• Participates in sampling, inspection, monitoring and construction of gas collection systems, including flare stations and gas-to-energy systems, and ground/surface water monitoring systems at landfill sites. Also participates in air quality sampling.
• Assists site engineer in survey support of daily landfill construction.
• Assists in construction inspection for public works construction projects.
FLOOD CONTROL:
• Performs field or laboratory physical tests of soils and other materials; conducts traffic census surveys, special traffic counts, signalization studies, radar speed checks, and traffic movement studies.
• Field checks roads for needed signals, signs, markings, and legends and updates inventory; gathers field data and makes calculations relating to stream flow, precipitation rates, and water quality.
• Operates current metering and other hydrologic data equipment.
• Tabulates and analyzes data collected and prepares reports.
• May assist in inspection of construction projects.
SURVEYING: Under close supervision, performs a variety of field and office sub-professional surveying work.
• Field Duties: Works as head chain and rod worker on a survey crew, measuring and recording distances and elevations; performs level and simple transit work; sets stakes and monuments.
• Serves as instrument technician on a trainee or relief basis; cleans and cares for instruments and tools; checks survey truck to ensure it is fully stocked and equipment is in order; prepares simple field notes.
• Office Duties: Assists in conducting title and property ownership research; learns to prepare less complex legal descriptions and documents following established procedures.
• Searches for data from survey notes, recorded maps, records of surveys, filed deeds and property descriptions; draws plans, profiles and cross sections of streets or other improvements from surveyor’s field book or other specific sources.
• Plots tract maps and parcel maps; reviews, researches, and processes street name requests; assists in the preparation of final designs or drawings. |

Typical Qualifications:
|
Experience: Two years of sub-professional civil engineering experience; College level courses in civil engineering or closely related subjects such as land surveying, soils erosion, soils testing, blueprint reading, mathematics, computer graphics, or hydrology may be substituted for the required experience on the basis of 12 semester or 18 quarter units equaling one year of experience.
Valid certificate of registration as an Engineer-in-Training or Surveyor-in-Training issued by the California State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers may be substituted for two years of sub-professional engineering experience.
Knowledge of: Elementary algebra, geometry, and trigonometry as they apply to engineering; manual and automated drafting techniques; survey principles and methods; the principles and methods of materials testing, hydrography, and traffic control.
Ability to: Make accurate engineering computations; follow oral and written directions; prepare clear and accurate diagrams and drawings from field notes and rough sketches; make a variety of soils and materials tests; perform survey field work, tabulate and analyze data and prepare reports; learn techniques of manual and automated drafting; maintain effective working relations with others. |
