Salary Information:
Level I: $4,259.50 to $5,178.25 monthly
Level II: $4,685.83 to $5,695.00 monthly
This is a single classification with two (2) salary levels. Level I/Range A is the level at which initial appointments to Telephony Systems Technician are typically made; and advancement from the lower to the higher level of the class is at the discretion of the appointing authority, provided the minimum qualifications are met.

Performs installation, maintenance, repair, modification and testing of telecommunications equipment and systems such as intercommunication systems, voice and data terminals, digital and analog switching equipment and cable and fiber systems.
Incumbents at both levels of Telephony Systems Technician install, maintain and repair voice/data electronic equipment including computerized branch exchange equipment, electronic telephones, key telephone systems, alarm systems, data circuits and terminals, but (Level I) incumbents work under close supervision on specialized equipment and systems (such as large computerized branch exchange equipment and data circuits utilized in Sacramento County) until proficiency is achieved. Incumbents at (Level II) are additionally responsible for independently analyzing and solving problems associated with installing, maintaining and repairing all County voice/data telecommunications equipment and systems. |

Examples of Knowledge and Abilities:

Level II
Knowledge Of- Tools, equipment, practices and methods of installing voice/data telecommunications and signaling equipment.
- Construction, assembly repair and operation of electronic voice/data equipment.
- Various network interfaces such as 2-wire, 4-wire, loop start, ground start, duel tone multiple frequency, simple frequency and direct inward dialing.
- Basic theory of electronics including solid state and integrated circuits.
- Electronic mathematics.
- Safety procedures such as handling electrical energy devices.
- Principles and procedures of fabricating, installing, maintaining, repairing, operating and testing voice/data, switching, complex carrier equipment, test devices and other telecommunications equipment.
Ability To- Diagnose defects in voice/data system and signaling equipment.
- Read and interpret electrical and electronic schematic diagrams, blueprints and service manuals.
- Use a variety of hand tools to construct, install, operate, maintain, repair, modify and operate electronic equipment.
- Perform tests on complex electronic circuitry.
- Use precision test instruments.
- Prepare and maintain records and reports.
- Write and speak English at the level necessary for satisfactory job performance.
- Carry out written and oral directions.
- Maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and other governmental and private business personnel.
Level I
Same as for Telephony Systems Technician (Level II) except that work is originally performed under close supervision; but as experience is gained, greater independence and less detailed supervision is received. |

Minimum Qualifications:
Any combination of experience and education or training that is likely to provide the required knowledges and abilities. Typical ways to obtain the knowledges and abilities would be:
Level II
One year of experience performing the duties of Telephony Systems Technician (Level I) in Sacramento County service;
Or: Four years of experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of voice/data telecommunications equipment including key telephone systems; electronic switching equipment; private automatic change equipment; alarm signaling equipment and 2-wire and 4-wire interface networks.
Note: The four years of experience must have also included one year of journey level experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of computerized electronic switching systems of at least 200 port capacity and equipment and systems comparable to the Sacramento County Telecommunications System.
Level I
Three years of experience in the installations, maintenance and repair of voice/data telecommunications equipment including key telephone systems; electronic switching equipment; private automatic base exchange equipment, alarm signaling equipment and 2-wire and 4-wire interface networks.
Education Substitution: Education or training in electrical technology, electrical engineering, electronics, communications technology or a field that is directly related to the Knowledges and Abilities, above, may substitute for one year of the required experience; acceptable proof of such education or training is one of the following: a) an A.A. or A.S. degree in one of the above fields from an accredited two-year college; or b) a certificate of completion of a vocational training program in one of the above fields at an accredited college, trade or military school; or c) completion of 30 semester units in one of the above fields at an accredited two-year college or university.

- The level at which initial appointments to the class of Telephony Systems Technician are made
- Advancement from the lower to higher level of this class (Level I to Level II), are at the discretion of the appointing authority, providing the minimum qualifications are met.
Special Requirements:
- A valid Class 3 or higher California Driver's License by date of appointment. Failure to maintain the license may be cause for disciplinary action under Civil Service Commission Rule 11.4. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to physical disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
- Normal color vision.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs. of equipment while standing, leaning or lying in various positions to install equipment.
- Ability to climb and install equipment on antenna towers and other structures.
Probationary Period: The probationary period for this classification is six (6) months. |

Testing Process
Minimum Qualifications – To be accepted into the testing process, the information submitted on the application must clearly demonstrate that the applicant meets the required minimum qualifications by the cut-off date. Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications by the final filing date will advance to the next testing phase – the Training & Experience Evaluation Exam.
Formula Rate (Training & Experience Evaluation) Exam – The evaluation of the candidate’s relevant experience, education and training, as shown in response to the Training & Experience Evaluation supplemental questions, weighted 100%. A panel of subject matter experts will only evaluate the responses to the Training & Experience Evaluation supplemental questions in this job announcement. All candidates successful in the testing process will be notified by mail of their score and ranking and placed on the eligible list in rank order. The rank is determined by the test score attained from the evaluation of the candidate’s responses to the Training & Experience Evaluation supplemental questionnaire.
Note: Responses to the Training & Experience Evaluation supplemental questionnaire must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. on the cut-off date in order to be evaluated.
